Corn

Plant: CornSweet Corn

Garden Prep Pointers:

*Select a full sun location where corn has not been planted within the past year.

*Till soil thoroughly, mix in 12-12-12 and nitrogen (46-0-0), or organic fertilizer (amount specified on package).

Planting Season:

*Cincinnatians should plant corn seed from May 7th- June 1st.  (5/7 is the week before frost free date)

Planting Guide:

*Seeds: Direct sow seeds 6-8” apart in rows 30” from each other.

*Plant multiple short rows next to each other as opposed to one long row as each corn plant needs many neighboring corn plants to aid in pollination.

Planting Notes:

*Water thoroughly after planting

*Seeds should sprout about 1 week after planting

Upkeep:

* Keep rows weed free for best results

*fertilizing again is not necessary unless leaves show signs of yellowing (starting at the bottom leaves first)

Fruiting Habits:

*Varieties vary, however most corn yields about 7-9 weeks after planting.

*Expect about 1 good ear per plant, with a few plants not producing harvestable ears.

Growers Favorite Varieties in order:

*Bi-Color: (Yellow and White kernels on the same cob) Providence, Ambrosia

*White: Silver King- old fashion flavor with new growth habits

*Yellow: Honey Buns

Grower Notes:

*If using organic fertilizer, be sure to increase the suggested rate.  Corn uses quite a bit of nitrogen.

Fruits of Knowledge:

*Ears with slight bug damage can be a good sign, signifying no chemicals added.
