Plant: Green Beans
Garden Prep Pointers:
*Select a full sun location.
*Till soil thoroughly, mix in 15-15-15, or organic fertilizer (amount specified on package).
Planting Season:
*Cincinnatians should plant bean seed from May 7th- June 15th. (5/7 is the week before frost free date)
Planting Guide:
*Seeds: Direct sow seeds 4-6” apart in rows 30” from each other.
Planting Notes:
*Water thoroughly after planting
*Seeds should sprout about 1 week after planting
Upkeep:
* Keep rows weed free for best results
*fertilizing again is not necessary beans are legumes and “produce nitrogen” in the soil
Fruiting Habits:
*Varieties vary, however most beans yield about 6-7 weeks after planting.
*Plant about 20-30 ft to yield enough for a 4 person family plus enough crop to freeze for winter months.
Growers Favorite Varieties in order:
*Stringless: BlueCrop
*String Bean: Volunteer Half-Runner (not recommended for beginners)
Grower Notes:
*Beans can be very therapeutic to pick and makes a beautiful garden when plants mature into nice bushy green bushes.
*Other than weed control, beans can be low maintenance.
Fruits of Knowledge:
* Beans are a great crop to grow organically. Beans can withstand some bug damage, are not susceptible to many diseases and the fruit does not rot on the plant easily. Use Oils and insecticidal soaps for insect control and control weeds manually.
