Plant: Seed Potato
Garden Prep Pointers:
*Select full sun location where potatoes have not been planted within the past 24 months.
*Till soil thoroughly, mix in 15-15-15, or organic fertilizer (amount specified on package).
Planting Season:
*Plant outside May 15th – June 15th (May 15th is best)
Plant Selection Tips:
*Choose seed potatoes with good eyes.
*Cut the potatoes into sections (3-4 per medium potato) each with a good eye-set.
*Dry sections for several days, with eyes up, exposed to light. (you're trying to get eyes to start growing some)
Planting Guide:
*Plant 12” apart with eyes facing up on a slight ridge / hill
*As plants begin to grow, mound the soil up around the shoots a few times promoting a larger potato harvest in the Fall.
Upkeep:
*Water frequently, weed often
*watch for bugs and take care appropriately, Pharm Solutions found at Blooms & Berries offers great organic pest control options.
Fruiting Habits:
*Plants will be ready to harvest within 2 days of a killing frost. Potatoes can be dug, cleaned and set out to dry.
Grower Notes:
*Be sure to water enough as the hilling nature of planting potatoes promotes drier soil.
