Plant: Raspberries

Garden Prep Pointers: 

*Select full sun location where tomatoes or peppers have not been planted in the past 24 months.

*Till soil thoroughly, mix in 15-15-15, or organic fertilizer (amount specified on package).

*Create 4-6 inch hills about 18-24" wide.

Planting Season: 

*Plant outside May 1st – June 1st (First week in May is best)

Plant Selection Tips: 

*Dormant bare root plants are best, but young plants in gallon containers would work well too.

Planting Guide:

*Plant 24”-36" apart to create hedge-like row.

Planting Notes: 

*Spread roots out in shallow hole, do not expose roots above ground, do not bury stem below ground.

Upkeep:

*After planting, fertilize mid-late summer.

*Water often, establishing your crop the first year is crucial. 

Fruiting Habits:

            *Plants will fruit some the first season, however, the yield will be good the following year and better yet the third year.

Growers Favorite Varieties:

            *Red: Nova

Grower Notes:

*You'll want to trellis the plants when they are one year old. Double posts at the end of the rows and wire down the length of the row works well.

*After year two, prune older canes off at ground during winter months to encourage better fruit set.  Only 2nd year canes set fruit. Repeat every winter for best results

*Raspberries will last a LONG TIME when properly taken care of

*To encourage more plants, keep soil near plants clear, as roots will send up more canes to fill out and create a hedge like row.
